The Mars Color Imager (MARCI), developed by Malin Space Science Systems Inc., is the optical system that will fly aboard the Mars Climate Orbiter. The instrument consists of two cameras that will take both wide-angle and medium-angle images of Mars. The wide-angle images will give daily weather maps of the Martian atmosphere, giving visual data to corrolate with the data provided by the PMIRR instrument, a weather station aboard the orbiter. The higher-resolution medium-angle camera with study the alteration of the Martian surface due to changing atmospheric conditions and winds.
